About the Center
« home

Welcome to the Student Exhibition Center. While the center is part of the university, it is under the umbrella of programs overseen by the College of Arts & Letters. The Associate Dean is responsible for the administrative supervision of the Center. While the Center's Director provides daily management.

Our responsibilities are to promote the use of the facility in order to enrich both the academic and cultural aspects of the university experience. The purpose of the Center is to benefit students by providing space for them to exhibit displays of interest to their respective departments and organizations. Our main goal is to make the Student Exhibition Center a place of interest to both the Missouri State University campus and to the community of Springfield.

Each semester the Department of Art and Design holds its Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition at the Center. Other shows have included photography, metals and jewelry, ceramics, painting and drawing, and sculpture. Housing and Interior Design students have held their senior show at the Center. Literary readings and Theatre and Dance Department exhibits have also been included in the calendar of events.

Role of the SEC Director and Staff
The SEC Director provides leadership and general management for the Student Exhibition Center. General duties include coordinating student exhibitions, publicizing SEC events, supervising student workers, managing the SEC budget, and managing the physical aspects of the facility, particularly making sure the space is ready for new exhibits. The Director may be asked to assist with installation, labels, publicity or other duties associated with the event, but it should not be assumed that the Director will serve as the primary supervisor of the student exhibitors. The Director may offer advice, instruction and mentoring, but cannot assume sole responsibility for the educational needs of the student exhibitors. The Director will work with faculty members and sponsors to determine the amount and type of assistance needed and will guide faculty and students who are unfamiliar with SEC procedures. The student workers help prepare the space for exhibits, assist with receptions and serve as monitors during regular hours of operation.

Role of the SEC Advisory Board
The SEC Advisory Board serves the Director and Associate Dean in making recommendations concerning exhibition proposals, policies and procedures, and any other SEC business which may come before it. The Board’s recommendations are not binding, but should be regarded with serious consideration. In those instances where the Director or the Associate Dean makes a decision contrary to the Board’s recommendation, he or she must meet with the Board to explain the reasons for the Decision. The board will consist of the following members:

—Faculty member from the Art and Design Department
—Faculty member not from the Art and Design Department
—Student recommended by the Student Government Association

The SEC Director and the Associate Dean will attend all Board meetings as non-voting participants. The Board will select its own chairperson. Board members will be appointed by the Associate Dean through a process of soliciting nominations and volunteers from appropriate areas.
